Diabetes mellitus is a systemic metabolic disorder that can lead to various complications, including those affecting the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common and serious microvascular complications of diabetes, resulting in damage to the retinal blood vessels and potential vision loss. This article reviews the pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and current management strategies for diabetic retinopathy. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial to preventing vision impairment and improving patient outcomes. The importance of glycemic control, regular ophthalmologic examinations, and advances in treatment methods are emphasized.
