Abstract

This article examines the clinical and epidemiological significance of the co-infection of ascariasis, caused by the nematode Ascaris lumbricoides, and giardiasis, caused by the protozoan Giardia intestinalis (lamblia). Both helminthic and protozoan infections are among the most prevalent parasitic diseases globally, often sharing common socio-economic and environmental risk factors, which predisposes individuals, particularly children, to concurrent infection. The paper analyzes the pathophysiological interactions between these two parasites, exploring how the immunomodulatory effects of chronic ascariasis may potentially alter the intestinal microenvironment and influence the severity and symptomatology of giardiasis. The article also discusses challenges in diagnosis and provides considerations for an integrated treatment strategy aimed at effective, sequential eradication of both parasites. Understanding the synergistic impact of this common polyparasitism is crucial for improving management protocols and public health outcomes in endemic regions.
